pounds in just three weeks. >> wow, that is very impressive. but we're going to begin this morning with that terrifying crash at the daytona international speedway. sight of today's premier race, the daytona 500. abc's matt gutman joins us now from the scene. good morning to you, matt. >> reporter: good morning, bianna, nearly 200,000 people were on hand here to watch that nearly physics-defying crash. a 3500 pound stock car launched into the air, disintegrating as it launched into the fence. parts sprung into the crowd, 28 people hurt, including a child. all of them this morning are in stable condition. this morning, fans and drivers, alike, recovering from near-death at nascar. >> stuff was flying everywhere, it was like you were in a war zone. >> reporter: this massive shotgun blast of debris in the stands came after this tangle of cars on the last lap. >> and contact! >> reporter: watch these cars heading toward the finish line,

when kyle larson's number 32 is launched airborne. >> the front of the car was gone. and the rest of the car was sitting in the stands. >> reporter: in this video shot by a fan, you can see chunks of steel shooting into the stands. >> oh, my god! >> one of the fires flies over the fence and into the stands. >> reporter: this 25-pound car tire plunged ten rows into the packed stands. nearby, terry rushed to the aid of his brother eddie. whose leg was slashed by a three-foot piece of shrapnel. >> i grabbed my belt and tied it around the leg. that seemed to help. because it cut down the bleeding. >> reporter: rescuers came quickly, but more than two dozen hurt, two of them critically. but dedicated fans said that the accident won't keep them from being at nascar's premier race, later today, the daytona 500. >> i got hit by a part of an engine and i got a broken leg. but i'm not going to miss the race tomorrow. >> reporter: not even this man, you see skipping over and ducking the onslaught of debris. >> stuff flying everywhere, fluids, parts, pieces.

>> reporter: crashes are a well-known part of the nascar experience. watch this 25-car pileup in 2012, and in this carl edwards' crash in 2009, eight fans were injured. >> oh, my gosh. >> welcome back to daytona international raceway. >> reporter: but it's gender not carnage that will have millions of fans glued to the daytona 500 today. for the first time ever, a woman, danica patrick, leads the race after winning pole position, a coveted spot in the front of the track. now, race officials say they have been working through the night to get the track ready to go today, and of course, mend that fence, they could get some extra time. it could rain today. we could see some delays. dan? >> matt gutman, thank you. let's bring in allen bestwick who is on the scene calling the race for our partner network, espn. allen, has years of experience on the track. allen, thank you for being with us this morning. let me ask you on the air yesterday, you described this crash as "shocking but not surprising." those were your words.

what did you mean by that? >> well, when you have drivers on the last lap of a race at daytona's, the sport's hallowed ground, charging to the finish with a chance to win, they're going to do whatever it takes to try to win. when people are racing, doing whatever it takes at nearly 200 miles an hour, we shouldn't be surprised when the unexpected happens. yet, even though the unexpected can happen we're still shocked when it does. it's still shocking to see something pierce that safety fence. and wind up on the grand stand side. drivers assume the risk of competing. fans don't necessarily assume that risk when they come to watch the race. >> so, let me pick up on that. if i'm part of a family this morning and i'm watching the pictures. and i'm thinking, should i take my family members and loved ones to a nascar event, should i be thinking twice? >> no, not at all. you should grab your sun block and head out to the racetrack and have a good time. i have been doing this for over 25 years. and i can only recall four times

in those 25 years, that's hundreds of thousands of laps of racing where i have seen anything similar to this. just four times in 25 years. the analogy that i'll make is like going to an airport, getting on an airplane, enjoy your flight. it's safe. strange things happen on rare, rare occasions. that's the case with auto racing as well. >> i suspect i know how you're going to answer this question, but let me touch the third rail. some people have raised the question, perhaps the daytona 500 should not go on today, what is your view of that? >> and that's a very natural reaction to consider out of respect for those who were injured here yesterday. but, the race should go on. just as in every other area of life, we carry on. the drivers, today, have a chance to win the biggest prize in their sport, the daytona 500. they have been preparing for this for three months. fan, some of them you heard in your own report, have been planning to come here for a year on vacation, to see this race. the race will go on and it should. before the race, the drivers

the "why" of the pope's resignation, let us just take him at his word. >> our thanks to david wright reporting in from rome. let's check the other headlines developing this morning. good morning, everyone. we begin with chaos at a chicago mall. 20 people were arrested and 2 suffered minor injuries after a melee broke out after a promotional concert by popular boy band mindless behavior. mall officials say the band just finished its event for the tween girl fan base when a group of about 30 young people began throwing money into the air causing havoc. and las vegas police have identified a suspect in deadly shooting last week on the strip. they suspect the 26-year-old amar harris. harris allegedly opened fire on a maserati on thursday slamming into a taxi. and it burst into flames, killing three people. in south africa, the parents of reeva steenkamp are speaking out for the first time today. she was shot to death by her

boyfriend, paralympian oscar pistorius. who is now free on bail. abc's bazi kanani is in pretoria, south africa. >> reporter: good morning, ron. the parents of oscar pistorius' slain girlfriend will be seen in their first sit-down interview on south african tv tonight as they begin to open up a little bit more about their feelings, now ten days after the shooting death of their daughter, reeva steenkamp. pistorius said that he mistook her for an intruder. prosecutors believe he intentionally shot her through a bathroom door after an argument. steenkamp's father said this weekend in an interview with a local newspaper, if the way he says it happened is true, i'll be able to forgive him one day. but if it's not like that, he should suffer. he is the one who will have to live with his conscience. we're also learning today that oscar pistorius isn't the only one in his family facing serious criminal charges. his brother, carl, who sat behind him every day at his bail hearing last week, is accused of homicide for a death of a motorcyclist in a traffic accident. he was also supposed to appear in court last week but his case

was postponed. oscar pistorius is now living at his uncle's house in pretoria under strict bail conditions until his trial begins. ron? >> bazi kanani, thank you for that report from south africa. in china, talk about an explosive situation. a warehouse full of fireworks caught fire and the flames, igniting the fireworks inside sending them shooting into the air, just about every direction. there were, however, no reports that anybody was injured. finally, another milestone for women in sports, ronda rousey and liz carmouche squared off in the main event last night for ucf's first female fight. rousey retained her title with a first-round win. i want you give you an excerpt from the blow by blow i was reading online. rousey eats a hook, grabs a clench, carmouche goes down with a headlock. and is sinked into a rear naked choke, whatever that is. >> i think that's ginger and mine's next project.

>> coming up next week on "gma." thank you, ron. now to a very different type of story. t-minus five days to yet another fiscal cliff. $85 billion across the board spending cuts. >> that's right. president obama warning of dire consequences for everything from air travel to food safety. how bad will it really be? let's go to george stephanopoulos host of "this week" for more. good morning, great to see you. the president is sounding the alarm. unlike the fiscal cliff at the beginning of the year, you're not seeing much pressure from from sexual street, ceos. and economists. are politicians overstating this? >> i think no one really knows yet. you said that $85 billion in across the board cuts. the congressional budget office said when you look at it, it's only going to be about half that, in this year right now. it's going to slope in. the potential for close to a million federal workers out of work. pay cuts for federal workers. unemployment checks going down and big effects on defense as well. we'll have to see how this plays

but the blame game is in full swing right now. and i would be cautious about wall street's response. there's a lot of strength to the under lying economy. most economists do agree, if the sequester actually kicks in, it is going to harm economic growth this year. >> let's talk about the bigger picture. we're lurching from crisis to crisis to crisis, is there any hope of grand bargain, that we sort out spending and taxes going forward? >> not any time fast. this seequester is going to kick in. the cuts will take place. the next big deadline is the end of march, march 27th, win the government running out of money. they'll have to come up with some agreement to continue that as well. there's some hope that might lead to broader negotiations. as of right now, both sides are dug in. the president and democrats saying, any agreement must include revenues and the republicans saying, no, it will not. >> thank you, george. we appreciate that. >> have fun in l.a. covering the oscars. >> george will have a lot of company on the broadcast today. two powerhouse panels and
